Quick answer: do I need a B2 English certificate to Study in Poland?
In many cases — yes.
If you want to study in English in Poland, you may need to prove that your English is at least B2.
A simple rule: if you are not an EU/EEA or Swiss citizen and you are applying with a school-leaving certificate or degree issued outside Poland, you should check the B2 requirement carefully.
The rule can apply to:
- first-cycle studies — Bachelor’s and engineering programmes
- long-cycle Master’s programmes
- second-cycle Master’s programmes
Your country of residence alone does not decide this. What matters is your citizenship or legal status and the education document you use to apply.
Some people covered by EU free-movement rules, including EU/EEA and Swiss citizens and certain people protected by the UK Withdrawal Agreement, are treated differently under the statutory rules.
For example, applicants from countries such as Turkey, Ukraine, India, Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Nigeria and Tunisia will commonly need to check this requirement when applying on the basis of a foreign education document.
The simplest rule
If you are applying from outside the EU/EEA/Swiss statutory group with a foreign education document to an English-taught programme, plan to prove at least B2 English unless one of the recognised exceptions below applies.
You need B2 English evidence unless…
In most cases covered by the new rules, you need proof of English at B2 or higher.
You may not need to take a separate English exam if the rule does not apply to you, or if you already have another document that the regulation accepts as proof of English.
Examples include a Polish matura or Polish higher-education diploma used as your admission document, a qualifying higher-education diploma that records English as the language of instruction, an International Baccalaureate Diploma with English as the relevant primary language, a European Baccalaureate with English as L1 or L2, a qualifying philology or applied-linguistics degree meeting the regulatory conditions, or the relevant sworn-translator qualification.
Important
Completing an ordinary secondary school where lessons were taught in English is not automatically a nationwide exemption under the current regulation.
If you have studied in English before but you are unsure whether your exact document qualifies, ask your university Admissions team before assuming that you do not need a language certificate.
The safest option if you need B2: LANGUAGECERT International ESOL B2 Communicator
If you already know that you need B2, LANGUAGECERT International ESOL B2 Communicator is the most straightforward LANGUAGECERT option.

Do not submit only half of your ESOL qualification
This is one of the most important points on this page.
International ESOL is modular.
You take:
Written — Listening, Reading and Writing and Spoken — Speaking as two separate components.
However, Study in Poland requires proof of all four skills.
After you successfully complete both modules, LANGUAGECERT generates a single unified four-skills certificate. LANGUAGECERT states that candidates who need a four-skills ESOL qualification should complete both modules and use the unified four-skills certificate where required.

Submit your unified International ESOL 4-skills certificate.
Keep your separate Written and Spoken Statements of Results and certificates available in case your university Admissions team asks for additional supporting documentation.
What level do I need?
B2 is the minimum — but check your programme
For candidates covered by the statutory verification process, the university must require a level not lower than B2.
A university may set a higher threshold, for example C1, for a particular programme.
So:
B2 = national statutory minimum but your programme may require C1 or another higher level.
Check your programme’s current admissions page before choosing your exam level.
If it says B2, International ESOL B2 Communicator is the direct fixed-level option.
If it says C1, choose International ESOL C1 Expert or another qualifying certificate at the required level.

What if my university website does not mention LANGUAGECERT?
Do not assume that LANGUAGECERT is not accepted.
This is particularly important because some university websites and Admissions pages may not yet fully reflect the rules introduced in 2025.
From 1 August 2025, Ministry of Science and Higher Education guidance states that, for the statutory verification route, language verification must be carried out using documents identified by the Minister in the regulation. LANGUAGECERT International ESOL B2+, Academic B2+ and LTE 4 Skills B2+ are among those documents.
If your application is covered by this regulation and your LANGUAGECERT certificate has the required level and all four skills, the university must accept it as one of the permitted documents — even if its website has not yet been updated or its Admissions page does not list LANGUAGECERT by name.

Study in Poland: your English certificate step by step
1. Choose an English-taught programme in Poland
Start with the university and programme you want to apply for.
Check:
- programme language
- admission level
- required English level
For the statutory route, the requirement cannot be below B2.
2. Check whether the B2 verification rule applies to you
If you are a non-EU applicant using a foreign education document, assume that you should check the requirement carefully.
If none of the recognised alternative-document routes applies to you, you will normally need a qualifying language document.
3. Check whether your programme requires B2 or more
Do not automatically book B2 before checking.
If the university requires:
B2 → choose B2
C1 → choose C1
The regulation sets the floor, not necessarily the final level for every programme.

7. Pass both components
At B2:
Written: 75/150 = Pass
Speaking: 25/50 = Pass
For Written, the 75 points are accumulated across Listening, Reading and Writing combined. You do not have to score 50% separately in every Written skill.
If you pass one component but not the other, you can re-sit the component you still need.

8. Download your four-skills certificate
After successfully completing Written and Spoken, use the unified four-skills certificate for the admissions purpose requiring all four English skills.
9. Submit it to your university
Follow the document-upload procedure specified by your target university.
Usually this means submitting the certificate or result documentation through the university’s:
- online admissions portal
- Admissions Office
together with your other application documents.
10. Your university verifies the result
The receiving institution is responsible for reviewing the document during the admissions process.

Do I need a B2 English certificate to study in Poland?
In many cases, yes.

What if my university does not list LANGUAGECERT on its website?
For the statutory admission process, this does not mean that a qualifying LANGUAGECERT document can be ignored.
MNiSW guidance states that from 1 August 2025 language verification under this mechanism must be based on documents specified in the ministerial regulation.
If your certificate is one of those documents and meets the required level and four-skills configuration, ask Admissions to verify the current regulation.

Can my university require C1 instead of B2?
Yes.
B2 is the statutory minimum for the relevant verification mechanism.
A programme can set a higher required language level.
Can I use an English-medium secondary-school certificate instead?
Do not assume that ordinary secondary education taught in English automatically exempts you.
The regulation names specific alternative documents. A general secondary-school statement that English was the language of instruction is not in itself a universal nationwide exemption.

Yes.
